Abstract

This research examines the attitudes of stroke survivors and their caregivers in relation to their church communities. This study is based on semi-structured interviews of 15 stroke survivors and their caregivers. The interviews reveal that the participants’ church communities were generally excellent at providing initial comfort and practical support, but poor at truly including the stroke survivors and recognizing their desire for purpose after the “crisis” period. Survivors who formed subcommunities of members with disabilities found places within the church that manifested patience and a comfort with disability.
