Abstract

Persons with disabilities deserve not only access to public facilities, but also a sincere and unaffected welcome when they arrive. The author presents, with the compelling depth of personal experience, the human value of combining public accessibility accomodations with basic hospitality and compassion. The physical, sensory, and mentally challenged (and their families) often experience social living as "aliens in the land of normalcy." At stake is not only cultural awareness but the very nature of social and moral responsibility.
